Want a Glow: Get your Beauty Sleep

“Next time you think of beautiful things, don’t forget to count yourself in” - Anonymous

Do you have a pile of products in your dressing table? Do you find yourself struggling to achieve the glass like-skin which is advertised virally by the Korean industry. Despite spending hundreds of rupees, you find yourself having a compromised skin. The answer lies in the simplest step that you missed i.e., lack of sleep. Why? Let’s talk science.

Sleep as we all know is a restorative process. It’s a necessary element that tends to revitalise our body and make our skin rejuvenate overnight restoring the nutrients. But what happens when you spend less hours sleeping and more hours being awake in front of a screen. The result is breakouts, dull and wrinkled skin. This can be harmful over the years leading to sagging skin.

What is Beauty Sleep?

A restorative sleep aimed to rejuvenate the skin, restore the natural hormones and engage in collagen production for a more youthful looking appearance the next day. This could be achieved with a comfortable 7 to 9 hours sleep at night.

Downsides of Poor Sleep on Skin

Since skin is the largest organ in our body and collagen being the main component of skin rejeneration, moisture and elasticity. This helps skin to look tighter, bouncy, fresh and glowing. Often, the skin care industry aim to supplement collagen through creams and serums. Yet, the natural collagen building and restoration process is hindered due to the lack of sleep which often leads to the following problems:

  • Sagging Skin

  • Dullness

  • Breakouts

  • Reduced skin elasticity

  • Wrinkles

  • Dryness

  • Puffiness

  • Dark circles

Benefits of Beauty Sleep

Restoration

You are allowing your body to restore the benefits you have aided during the day such as the nutrients, physical exercise etc and also, aiding in blood circulation, metabolism, growth hormone synthesis, collagen production and cell turnover. These can be too hard to grasp, basically you are giving your body and mind, a break to do its job. This can allow you to feel fresh and ready to start your day.

Dark Circles and Puffiness

No one wants to show up at work or at a party looking dead and tired. This can also sometimes hinder your motivation and self-esteem overall making you discouraged to participate in social events. You also don’t want to slather an extra layer of concealer over your skin to look better.

Good Gut Health

Do you know if you poop well, your skin would glow? A good gut health is instrumental in maintaining the overall health of your skin. This would also be aided by sleep during the metabolism process that happens during our deep sleep stages.

Acne Free

Due to the lack of sleep, sometimes our skin undergoes tremendous stress leading to a compromised skin barrier. This can often irritate the inner lining of the skin leading to disruption in sebum production due to the lack of moisture produced by the body.

Better Mood

When you sleep less, research suggests that you tend to feel more frustrated and have a grumpy mood throughout the day. When you feel better, you have lesser stress and your cortisol levels also is at a low. This can actually make your skin glow and look fresh.

Self-confidence

Overall, when you feel better and look better, you tend to feel confident about yourself. This can lead to more participation and more success leading to an increased well-being.

So, let’s glow internally and externally. And be sure to get your beauty sleep consistently to have that glass-like skin. Good night!
