Struggle with Job Dissatisfaction: Life of a Software Engineer

Struggle with Job Dissatisfaction: Life of a Software Engineer

It wasn’t his first time waking up in the middle of the night thinking and panicking about his job. He was panting and sweating restlessly not knowing what to do. He dreaded going to work the next day.

Ravi (name changed), a software engineer at a multinational company, worked as a senior engineer yet, he always found himself stuck at his job not knowing how to move forward. His appraisals weren’t great and he wasn’t liking his job. He felt like a corpse everyday signing in and out. He always wanted to do something for the society and grow in his career but the fear of failure and the lack of resources at that moment kept him going in his current job.

Since the last 3 years, he has been dissatisfied with his job. Due to which, he developed stress-related illnesses, sleepless nights and waking up often in the middle of the night and slept barely 3 hours a night. He had anxiety attacks every other day and restlessness at night. He lost interest in every activity he used to enjoy and disconnected from his friends and family.

One day he approached the sleep coach at ‘gudsleepz’ on ‘Taking control over your life and sleep’ not knowing where the journey might lead him. After the first encounter, Ravi reached out to the sleep coach with a lot of questions. When our sleep coach met him, she knew he was lost and needed someone to give clarity. And Ravi enrolled for his first session at Gudsleepz..

Journey begins..

First session went on by analysing Ravi’s struggles and understanding the core of his issues which is causing sleeplessness. Our sleep coach took a much more friendlier and compassionate approach to empathise with him.

He said, ‘I have been the only son for my parents and I did what I could’ but I’m not happy. I did engineering, joined a good company and gave my salary to my family. I know, I might sound selfish that despite having everything, I complain. I don’t know why I’m this way. Most often I feel like I'm losing my mind. Am I?

The sleep coach carefully listened to him and understood that he has been experiencing the issues since childhood. A series of experiences of every ‘single child’ of wanting to gain parent’s approval and also, being able to support the family. The internal need to rebel and pursue their passion but the external compulsion to pay bills and maintain a stable job. He is experiencing built up guilt, helplessness, hopelessness and worthlessness. This is the triad of negative thought processes. He is scared, angry at himself and fear of failure is encompassing him.

What he needed was a way out of this perceived trap he put himself in!

After helping Ravi through a series of coaching sessions, Ravi first addressed his childhood trauma. Later, the sleep coach worked with his sense of identity and confusion. And slowly moved him to get in touch with his internal emotions and thoughts. Finally, the action. He was slowly given grounding exercises along with a narrative diary to track his progress. He started small in building his passion, being assertive and managing negative emotions. Eventually, Ravi was able to break the pattern of helplessness.

Due to his current improved sleep habits, Ravi who once used to be indecisive and helpless started to make better decisions, manage fear related to his career, worked on himself and improved professionally on his skill set and finally, could launch his new career. Now, he holds a managerial position at a leading tech company.

This isn’t a story about any person but a number of clients who are able to ask the first question and take the first ever step towards freedom.
